Kicking off the 2014 Saint Patrick’s day celebrations is the BIG ONE in the metropolis, yes Dublinnia.

Featuring free art exhibitions, documentaries, walking tours around Saint Patrick’s cathedral, outdoor ceilis (blessed be the weather) right in the city (make sure to practice your Siege of Ennis and Walls of Limerick beforehand).

Nibble your way through some craft food and drink your way through the whiskey and beer lakes at the IFSC Food Market throughout the weekend.

And if you left your green glasses at home, have no fear, many of the city’s iconic buildings will be lit up in forty shades on Friday and Saturday at dusk.

Merrion Square and the Custom House throw off their more formal fronts and don their green party frocks as the city is filled with all the fun of the fun fair. Roll up, roll up.

And where would we be without the Father Ted show, this weekend live at the Laughter Lounge.this Saturday which also sees a festival treasure hunt starting at City Hall.

Later you can shake your shamrocks in St Stephen’s Green at the Live on The Green music event headed up by Jerry Fish. Joined by brass bands, ska and reggae musicians, you can get jiggy with it in your laced up hornpipes (and keep warm if the weather turns).

Sunday sees the Uni boat race up the Liffey (where else). There’s a 5k road race for Muppet lookalikes to warm up later in the morning. And a street carnival in Merrion Square. The city will be smattered with street performers of all types.

Anf of course on Sunday, there’s the big one, with the Festival Parade from Parnell Square through the city to Saint Patrick’s catheral. This year, Brian Boru takes centrestage amongst the many bands, puppets and floats from across the world.

Of course the rest of the country celebrates in similar flamboyant style with thousands of girl guides, boy scouts, noisy tractors, wringlet-ed Irish dancers, flame throwers, break dancers, high school dancers, legions of military and naval officers, leprechauns of all shapes and sizes, giant shamrock balloons and tricolours regardless of the weather.
